About the Through Their Eyes: Holocaust Arts & Writing Contest

Since it's creation in 2024, nearly 100 student artists, writers, and filmmakers in grades 5-12 have participated in the Through Their Eyes: A Holocaust Art and Writing Contest, sponsored by the Holocaust Education Center (HEC) of the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation. This contest focuses on honoring Holocaust victims (Jewish and non-Jewish and who died or survived), resisters, rescuers, and liberators. We challenge students to create artwork, poetry, prose, or film that would highlight their talents while helping them connect to those effected by the Holocaust.

“When students connect to individuals impacted by the Holocaust, that’s when it becomes important to them. It is hard to conceptualize the millions of people killed during the Holocaust, but learning the story of one person or group of people is manageable, more personal.”

Rebecca Lawson, Contest Coordinator

Through Their Eyes 2025

The 2025 contest awards ceremony was held at the Cohen Center on April 6th, 2025. The HEC Contest Committee was impressed by the artistic expression of all the students who participated. These entries came from Champaign, Effingham, Moultrie, and Vermillion counties. In her opening remarks, Rebecca Lawson, contest coordinator, said "It is our hope that the contest participants develop not only a personal connection to the Holocaust, but also a deeper understanding of the Holocaust as they create their pieces and reflect and learn." It was clear to the judges that each student was dedicated to honoring the topic of their project.

Judges come from all walks of life, and include university professors and other retired and current educators;  professionals in the TV and movie industry; professional artists and writers; Holocaust and history scholars; students from the University of Illinois and Columbia University in Chicago; and others who wanted to help promote student learning and creativity as well as Holocaust education. From Virginia to California, from Texas to Chicago, and many places in between, most of them looked at the entries in their areas of expertise knowing only the age range of the creators of the pieces.

Congratulations to ALL the students who participated in our contest and our sincerest gratiude to all of those who helped students enter our contest. We are proud to announce winners of Best In Show below.
