This past January the CUJF Holocaust Education Center (HEC) partnered with the Booth Library at Eastern Illinois University to host the Auschwitz Experience in the Art of Prisoners. This traveling Holocaust exhibit features 60 unique pieces of artwork from 12 survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. The exhibit was seen by over 200 individuals during its stay at EIU, visitors who came in frigid temperatures and snowfall to view this important display.
The HEC and Booth Library held a commemoration ceremony for International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th, marking the second year of this partnership. Attendees heard from EIU President Jay Gatrell and Booth Library Dean Brian Keith about the importance of commemorating this day. HEC educators Dr. Brian Kahn and Rebecca Lawson also spoke about the history of the exhibit and their connections to Eastern Illinois University. This event was featured in the local Journal Gazette and Times Courier.
Visitors would not have been able to view the exhibit without the support of 21 docents who helped guide attendees through heavy content and provided additional insights. We sincerely thank these volunteers, who served at the Auschwitz Experience for over 200 collective hours.
Volunteers are vital to the work of the Holocaust Education Center - if you are interested in getting involved, email hec@cujf.org or visit cujf.org/hec for more info.
