We will be hearing from CHAI Seniors committee chair Diana Jaher, discussing Film Noir. Thank you, Diana, for jumping in on short notice!
Born in the shadow of fascism, Film Noir depicts the darkness in content and style that infused World War II and post-World War II movies. Diana Jaher, who teaches a Noir course at Illinois Wesleyan, will examine the conditions that produced Film Noir, analyze its cinematic techniques, and detail the contributions of Jewish filmmakers whose own brushes with fascism profoundly shaped the genre.
Diana Jaher received her PhD in Theatre with a Graduate Minor in Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois, and currently teaches film, theatre, and English at IWU and Parkland College. From 1989-2006, she worked in casting for film, television, and theatre in New York and Los Angeles.
